recently i did a live painting at alice tully hall at lincoln center. this was in promotion of the movie “the soloist”, starring jamie foxx and robert downey, jr., and was meant to be a live art experience of sorts. i was accompanied by a wonderful string quartet from juilliard, had a nice audience, and the entire thing was a bit surreal.
here are a few quick shots of the 4′ x 6′ canvas that now takes up my entire hallway…it was going to be shipped off to LA but michelle, bless her heart, is allowing me to keep it. so i am going to continue working on it until my head explodes or until i decide it is finished, at which point i shall offer it to someone else that enjoys the piece.
the image started as a relatively simple concept, a study on color and layering and physical/implied motion, transforming particular sounds and textures onto a two dimensional surface. then i decided that i wanted an epic, iconic, fiery central image and made a blissdripmeltgramaphonograph.
the reaction from the ad agency and paramount pictures reps and the audience was super positive, but i don’t feel that this is finished. it will be someday, i hope. when it’s finished, an update will be in order.
